Michelle Josef


Michelle Josef has been a prominent member of the Canadian music scene for over thirty years. She has performed and recorded with a wide spectrum of Canadian and international artists including David Wilcox, Wild Strawberries, Jann Arden, Bill Bourne, Madagascar Slim, Prairie Oyster, Amos Garrett, Ember Swift, Bob Snider, Penny Lang, Sharon, Lois and Bram and Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones). She is a member of the prestigious Edmonton Folk Music Festival house band (since1986) performing with such artists as Solomon Burke, Taj Mahal and Long John Baldry. She has performed with blues legends such as Blind John Davis, Otis Rush and Etta James. She also held the drumming seat with the Toronto Blues Society Women’s Blues Revue, (1998-2009) performing with a host of artists as diverse as Alberta Adams, Jackie Richardson, Carole Pope, Suzie McNeil, Salome Bey and Dione Taylor. She has performed on over 150 albums including hit records such as David Wilcox's Hypnotizin' Boogie, Hot Hot Poppa and Do the Bearcat. She has also recorded albums with Prairie Oyster, Ember Swift and worked closely with internationally renowned producer Daniel Lanois on Sylvia Tyson's "Sugar for Sugar” album. in 2012 Michelle was the drummer in a tribute concert for the late Kate McGarrigle held at Massey Hall. The show featured Martha and Rufus Wainwright, Emmy Lou Harris, Bruce Cockburn among others. After the show, Robert Charlebois commented “Michelle is not one drummer, she is four drummers-a jazz drummer, a blues drummer, a folk drummer and a rock drummer!" Michelle is currently working in Toronto as a freelance session musician, teacher and music producer based out of her own studio Ozworld. She also plays regularly with her own band Hey Stella!
